Novel Stages

Novel Stages is a ‘festival’ of sorts that first premiered in May of 2020 in response to the unusual time we found ourselves in and the digital stages that now were our venues. Artists shared 30 minute sets of pre-recorded performances from their studios and homes (for better audio and video quality!), previously unavailable concert footage, and new creative presentations intended for your screen.

Novel Stages endeavors to champion artists who cross boundaries and challenge musical genre, and reward audiences eager to explore.

Artists included Ashley Bathgate, Hanna Benn, Grant Cutler, Haley, Holly Hansen, Her Crooked Heart, Humbird, Su Hwang, Kip Jones & ETHEL, Cameron Kinghorn, Eric Mayson, Kaleena Miller, Mark Morris Dance Group, Roomful of Teeth, Shara Nova, Deantoni Parks, and Tigue.

These pioneering artists include critically acclaimed performers from some of the finest ensembles, who regularly appear on some of the world’s greatest stages and festivals. They have been recognized for their excellence by the GRAMMYS, as a Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation, the Knight Foundation, McKnight Foundation, American Composers Forum, Rauschenberg 3Arts Fellows, Jerome Foundation, Native American Music Awards, as well as The New York Times, The New Yorker, NPR, Washington Post, Pitchfork, and other publications, and have recordings on labels ranging from Naxos, Innova, Cantaloupe Music, and New Amsterdam to Aesthmatic Kitty, Totally Gross National Product, Memphis Industries, and Nonesuch.

As a ticket buyer you received a private access code to the festival stream hosted on Vimeo from 2-10pm CDT, as well as a video file of each festival performance after the festival concludes.

Founded and curated by Bobby Maher, the inaugural production team included technical producer Jake Paque, and Partner/Editor Allegra Oxborough.
